# EPA List N

EPA's official list of disinfectants approved for use against SARS-CoV-2 and other emerging pathogens. The list every commercial sanitization product should be cross-referenced against.

## Detailed definition

EPA List N is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s published list of disinfectant products that have been reviewed and approved for use against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and against the Emerging Viral Pathogens (EVP) category more broadly. Inclusion on the list means the product’s manufacturer submitted efficacy data, label claims, and active-ingredient documentation that the EPA accepted under its EVP guidance.

For commercial sanitization work, List N matters for two reasons. First, it’s the credible reference. A vendor that claims “kills 99.9% of viruses including COVID-19” without being able to point at a List N entry is making a marketing claim, not a regulatory one. Second, the list specifies the contact time required for kill on the target pathogen — that’s the dwell time the surface must stay wet during application. A 10-minute contact-time product applied with a 30-second wipe is not actually being used as a disinfectant; it’s being used as a cleaner.

Every product CCSD carries on the truck for sanitization work is on [List N (opens in new tab)](https://www.epa.gov/coronavirus/about-list-n-disinfectants-coronavirus-covid-19-0), and we keep the SDS and label specs accessible so a facility manager or compliance officer can audit what was used on their site. For schools, medical offices, and food-service environments, that documentation is usually a requirement of the contract.

The list is updated regularly. The EPA adds new products as they’re approved and occasionally removes products whose registrations lapse. A product that was on the list two years ago may not be today, so the check happens fresh on every job — not from memory.
