National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors NORMI
Professional association and certification body for mold inspection and remediation. Trains inspectors and remediators on ANSI/IICRC S520-aligned procedures.
Detailed definition
The National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors (NORMI) is a professional association founded in 2004 that provides training, certification, and credentialing for mold inspection and remediation professionals across the United States. NORMI is one of two significant credentialing bodies in the indoor-air-quality and mold-remediation space; the other is the IICRC, whose S520 standard governs the technical procedure for mold remediation.
NORMI certifications include Certified Mold Inspector (CMI), Certified Mold Remediator (CMR), Certified Mold Assessor (CMA), and Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE), among others. The curriculum covers moisture intrusion diagnostics, air sampling methodology, containment construction, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial chemistry, and the documentation required to close out a job for insurance or real-estate transaction purposes.
For commercial cleaning, the NORMI-relevant work is less the headline “mold remediation” — which is a regulated specialty in some states — and more the adjacent work of (a) recognizing when a routine cleaning job has crossed into a remediation scope, (b) sanitization following water-loss events, and (c) cleaning HVAC system components and adjacent surfaces in a way that doesn’t aerosolize spores into the occupied space.
About CCSD’s NORMI status. Joe held NORMI credentials earlier in his career. They are currently expired. The training and operating procedures inform how we approach sanitization and post-water-loss cleanings, but we don’t claim current NORMI certification, and we won’t represent it on quotes or marketing. For an actual mold remediation project — testing, containment, removal — we refer to a currently-credentialed remediator rather than scope it ourselves.
